Privacy Policy
The short version
- The game can send anonymous run statistics, but only if you say yes. It is off until you choose, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings > Data.
- If you send feedback or a bug report, we receive what you wrote plus details about your current run.
- We do not collect your name, Steam account, email, location or device IDs, and we never store your IP address.
- We do not sell data, show ads or share data with anyone for marketing.
Who we are
Dread of the Deep is made by Boosted Bytes LLC ("we", "us"). We decide what data the game collects and how it is used. You can contact us about anything in this policy at [email protected].
1. Run statistics (optional, off by default)
The first time you reach the main menu, the game asks whether you want to share anonymous run data. Nothing is sent unless you choose Share anonymous data. You can change your answer at any time in Settings > Data.
If you agree, the game sends one report when each run ends. A report contains:
- a random ID for that run (made up fresh for each run and not tied to you, your account or your device)
- the game build and version, and whether it is the demo
- the difficulty, lighthouse and path you chose, and the run's random seed
- the weapons (including their rolled bonuses), items and perks you had, and when you got them
- shop offers you passed on
- per-wave statistics such as damage dealt and taken, kills, health, experience and currency
- how the run ended, how far you got and how long it took
- the date and time the run started and ended (in UTC)
- how many runs you had finished before this one
We use this to balance the game: to find weapons and items that are too strong or too weak, and difficulties that are unfair.
A report never contains your name, Steam account or ID, email, hardware, location or any device identifier. Reports do not contain an ID that links your runs together. However, the "runs finished before" count means that reports sent one after another from the same game could sometimes be recognised as coming from the same player. They still cannot be traced to who that player is.
If a report cannot be sent (for example, you are offline), the game saves it on your computer and tries again later. If you turn sharing off, any reports waiting to be sent are deleted and never sent.
2. Feedback and bug reports (only when you send them)
The in-game Feedback panel sends a message only when you press Send or Report bug. This is separate from the run-statistics setting, because pressing the button is your choice to send it. A report contains:
- the message you typed
- the game version and build
- your current run's details: run ID, wave, screen, difficulty, lighthouse, weapons and items
- Bug reports only: the most recent lines of the game's internal log, including error details. Before sending, the game replaces the names of user folders in any file paths (for example
C:\Users\<name>) with a placeholder. - Only if you tick the box: system information: operating system, processor, memory, graphics card and graphics memory, graphics API, screen resolution and display mode, your in-game graphics settings, and whether you are playing on a Steam Deck.
Please don't include personal details such as your email or real name in your message unless you want us to have them. Anything you type is stored as you wrote it.
3. How the data travels and where it is kept
Reports are sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to a service we run on Cloudflare. Like any internet service, Cloudflare necessarily sees your IP address in order to deliver the request. Our service does not record or store your IP address. Cloudflare acts as our service provider and handles network data under its own privacy policy.
Reports are kept in Cloudflare storage for up to 30 days, then copied to a private server operated by us in the United States. There they are used to build our internal balancing and bug-tracking tools, which only we can access.
Retention. Run statistics are anonymous and are kept for as long as they are useful for balancing the game. Feedback and bug reports are kept for one year, then deleted.
4. Why we're allowed to process it (EU/UK visitors)
- Run statistics: your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings > Data.
- Feedback and bug reports: your consent, given by choosing to send them, and our legitimate interest in fixing problems you report.
5. Your choices and rights
- Stop sharing run statistics at any time in Settings > Data. Nothing further is sent, and anything still waiting to be sent is deleted.
- Reports we already received. Run statistics contain nothing that lets us tell which reports are yours, so we cannot find, show or delete a specific person's run data. Data protection law recognises this situation (GDPR Article 11).
- Feedback you sent. Email us with roughly when you sent it and what it said, and we will delete it. You can also ask us for a copy.
- Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
6. What stays on your computer
Your save files, settings and local run history are stored only on your device, or in Steam Cloud if you use it. We do not receive them.
7. Steam
If you play through Steam, Valve handles your purchase, account, playtime and achievements under the Steam Privacy Policy. The game does not send your Steam name or ID to us.
8. What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising or tracking IDs.
- No selling or renting of data, and no sharing for marketing.
- No third-party analytics. Unity's own analytics and crash reporting are switched off.
We share data only with the service providers named above, or if the law requires it.
9. This website
This site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other companies. It is hosted on Cloudflare, which, like any web host, receives your IP address to deliver the pages to you.
10. Children
The game is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information in a feedback message, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change what the game collects, we will update this page and its effective date before the change ships.
